The big chill: It was a perfect summer day — blue sky, white clouds, calm seas. We are on Alcock Island, a rarely visited island off the Antarctic Peninsula. Inquisitive gentoo penguins follow our tracks through the knee-deep snow as we trek up the side of the glacier. Some of us find a rock on the edge of the rookery, and sit for an hour or so, losing ourselves in the daily drama of penguin life. A weddell seal rises from the water below, confused at what must seem like an invasion of giant bright red, yellow and blue gortex-clad penguins, but decides we’re not worth worrying about as he slides onto a floating ice floe and goes to sleep. Antarctica from the window: A 12-hour flight that brings you back to your point of departure without landing anywhere might not be everyone's idea of a good day trip....but a “day trip to nowhere” over Antarctica is one that those who've experienced it talk about for years afterwards. This is, without doubt, a flight like no other.
