Santiago Stopover: Framed by snow-capped Andean peaks, Santiago is a mixture of big-business high rise towers and arty bohemian enclaves. Take the cablecar up to the giant statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of Cerro San Cristobal and then head down on the 1930s funicular. For other great views, climb the stairs to the top of Santa Lucia's lovely park. Story by Lee Mylne
Fire and ice: There is a saying in Chile: ‘when God created the world he had a handful of everything left — mountains, deserts, lakes, glaciers — and he put it all in his pocket. But there was a hole in His pocket, and as He walked across heaven it all trickled out, and the long trail it made on earth was Chile.’

Gone to Patagonia: The weather is deteriorating, our joints stiff and sore from staying so still in the one spot for so long. The smooth, rounded pebbles are stabbing into my legs, the wind is whistling in my ears and my nose is so cold that I can no longer feel it. We are searching, watching and waiting for the elusive puma in Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park. National Geographic made a stunning documentary on the puma here a few years ago. The couple from room 109 saw one here yesterday evening as they were trekking past on their back from the Cuernos del Paine. They weren’t even looking. We’ve been here six hours, and nothing.
