Basque in the sun: A warm Biscay breeze, faintly scented with the aroma of fresh fish being fried in garlic, wafts over us, making the vivid late afternoon reflections of the coloured fishing boats on the harbour dance while whispering a promise about what’s in store for dinner that evening. It’s a long mid-summer evening, and the locals of Mundaka, a tiny fishing port a short bus ride from Bilbao in northern Spain, are loitering in the town square, idly watching children play while gossiping over glasses of wine and tiny plates of stuffed olives and crunchy anchovies.

Modern masterpiece: Most visitors come to Bilbao to visit the extraordinary Guggenheim museum, a collection of interconnecting, titanium-clad organically-shaped interconnecting blocks that house an astounding collection of modern art. It squats beside the river, shimmering in the harsh noon-time glare and has become the new hub of the city, with the streets that radiate out from the tangle of glass, granite and silver cladding now full of fabulous tapas bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
