Papua New Guinea

Time Out in Tufi: Tufi is renowned as one of Papua New Guinea 's top diving and snorkeling spots, but just spending time with the local villagers can open up a whole new world. I'm already hooked when I discover Fabian's guesthouse...and feel like Robinson Crusoe. Whether it's a village stay, diving the reefs, or paddling down the river on a dug-out canoe to a nameless waterfall, Tufi offers a rich experience.

Live and dangerous: The people of Rabaul have grown used to living with the constant eruptions of Mt Tavurvur, which leaves the town cloaked in grey ash. We're exploring the mysteries of the Mega-pode and its eggs when we get a taste of Tavurvur's wrath - and it's quite an experience. Much of Rabaul has moved away from the immediate onslaught and there's a wealth of history to explore but there's no doubting what the main attraction is. Story by Lee Mylne

Faces of Mt Hagen: Once a year, arts and culture and tourism meet in the Highlands as tribes from across PNG gather for the annual Mt Hagen Show. It is one of the most colourful spectacles on earth. Story by Lee Mylne

PNG...perhaps: Despite it's proximity to Australia, Papua New Guinea gets relatively few tourists, apart from those hardy souls walking the Kokoda Track. In part, this is due to a perception that PNG is a risky and unpredictable place to visit. But with organisation and local guides, it can be a rewarding and fascinating experience in a place that remains untouched by mass tourism and where the people retain an unworldliness not often found. Celebrating the Crocodile: After a four hour trip up the magnificent Sepik River, we arrive at Ambunti, a village about to celebrate one of its most respected inhabitants: the crocodile. At first, I think the crocs strapped across the chests of young men are fake...but then the eyes move. We join only a handful of Westerners witnessing the colour and music as the importance of the crocodile to this village is celebrated in one of PNG's least known festivals.
